In Dawson County, behind the natural beauty and small-town charm, are families quietly fighting for survival. At Ministries of Grace, we see these families. We know their names. And we’re walking alongside them with a wholistic approach to care that goes far beyond food.
Our mission is to help end hunger and break the cycle of poverty by addressing the root causes—not just the symptoms. Through programs like Meals by Grace and the Grace Works Training Center, we provide resources, support, and tools for long-term transformation.
Wholistic Care That Restores Dignity
When people think of nonprofit support, their minds often go straight to food. And yes, we do provide food—but we don’t stop there. Our wholistic care model offers a complete network of support to families who are struggling to get back on their feet.
Here’s how Ministries of Grace is making a difference in Dawson County:
- Ending Hunger: Weekly food delivery programs provide nutritious, consistent meals for children, seniors, and families.
- Job Training: Through our Grace Works Training Center, individuals gain practical skills that equip them to re-enter or advance in the workforce.
- Financial Literacy: We teach essential budgeting and money management skills to empower families to take control of their financial future.
- Workforce Readiness: Participants receive coaching on time management, job readiness, communication skills, personal development, and parenting & family dynamics.

By combining these efforts, we create a sustainable path forward for families who may have experienced unemployment, sudden crisis, or long-term poverty.
Real Stories That Remind Us Why
Every so often, a family’s situation touches our team in a way we can’t forget. One recent example came to us from one of our social workers—an all-too-familiar reminder of why long-term, wholistic care matters.
Autumn and April grew up in a trailer with leaking ceilings, broken floors, and a home overwhelmed by trash, pests, and chaos. For them, it was all they had ever known. Their mother, Melinda, struggled with addiction, and while she fought her own battles, her two young daughters were left to fend for themselves. Eventually, the Department of Family & Children’s Services intervened, placing the girls with their grandmother, Mary—a woman who hadn’t even known they existed.
Mary, already nearing retirement and living on a modest income, opened her one-bedroom home and her heart to Autumn and April. She rearranged her entire life to give them stability: mattresses on the floor, homework at the kitchen table, clothes stacked on bookshelves. Despite her love and effort, the financial strain quickly grew. Mary began skipping her own medications to feed the girls. As her health declined and bills mounted, she knew she couldn’t do it alone.
That’s when she called Meals by Grace.
Through our partnership, Mary found more than food. She found community, care, and ongoing support that made the impossible feel manageable. She found a reminder that she wasn’t forgotten—and neither were the girls.
These are the stories that keep us going. Because behind every data point is a face, a family, a future. And the truth is, some families—especially those living on fixed incomes due to retirement, disability, or other limitations—will need support longer term. That’s why we also offer sustainable options like gardening education and even opportunities to raise chickens.
But for everything else—they need you.
Long-Term Transformation, Not Temporary Relief
We believe in walking with people for the long haul. That’s why our programs are relationship-based and deeply personal. Every family is unique, and our services are tailored to meet each individual where they are—while guiding them toward where they want to be.
We’ve seen parents return to work with confidence. We’ve watched kids blossom in stable households. And we’ve celebrated alongside grandparents, caregivers, and neighbors who never thought they’d see the day when their household was thriving again.
This is what Christian nonprofit work in Dawson County should look like. Not just short-term fixes, but long-term flourishing.
