Help Domestic Violence Survivors Financially

When most people think about domestic violence, they picture the physical scars — not the financial ones. But for many survivors, the damage done to their independence is just as devastating.

That was true for Lucia (name changed for privacy), a mother of two who fled an abusive marriage with nothing but her children and a few grocery bags of clothing. No money. No car. No access to the family bank account. No recent job history. And no idea what to do next.

At Ministries of Grace, we’ve seen how deep those wounds go — and how vital ongoing support truly is. Here’s how you can help domestic violence victims beyond the shelter.

Why Financial Abuse Leaves Deep, Invisible Wounds

Abuse is about control — and finances are one of the most effective tools an abuser can use. Lucia’s husband had isolated her for years. She wasn’t allowed to work. She wasn’t listed on any bank accounts. She didn’t even have her own credit card.

When she left, she walked away with nothing.

Without immediate help, survivors like Lucia often face an impossible choice: stay in an unsafe home or leave and face homelessness.

Ministries of Grace Steps Into the Financial Gap

Lucia was referred to Ministries of Grace through a local counselor. Our team met with her to assess her needs and build a plan. It started with:

  • Weekly food support to ease the daily stress of feeding her kids
  • Gas and grocery gift cards so she could attend court dates and job interviews
  • Resume coaching to rebuild her confidence and get her back into the workforce
  • Essential items like cookware, cleaning supplies, and hygiene products

“I felt like a person again, not just a problem to be fixed. Ministries of Grace helped me see a future.” — Lucia

A Path to Independence and Impact

With consistent support, Lucia secured a part-time job and began rebuilding her life. She found safe housing, started budgeting for her family, and is now looking forward to continuing her education.

Her story is just one of many. But it’s proof that when survivors receive the right financial help, healing and independence are truly possible.
